Hotel TV

2019  |  UX  |  UI  |  ANDROID TV

I collaborated with a lead designer to revamp the DIRECTV Residential Experience (DRE) into "Hotel TV," a system better tailored to hotel needs, offering more flexibility and enhancing the guest experience. This transformation involved developing a detailed specifications deck and a prototype that demonstrated the project's potential, leading to a new revenue stream for AT&T and a feature at HITEC, the world's largest hospitality technology show.

User Research & Findings

We based our findings on a study focusing on guest behaviors and expectations, uncovering the following guest requirements:

  1. Desire to utilize their personal app accounts.

  2. Preference for a TV experience reminiscent of home (TV Guide feature).

  3. Recognition of potential variations in viewing patterns between home and hotel settings.

  4. Interest in an enriched hotel TV encounter with features like weather updates, accessible streaming applications (if accessible), and channel access.

UX Documentation

In response, we devised a two-part system framework. Firstly, a customizable App Launcher home screen capable of accommodating various hotel room apps. Secondly, a Live TV App experience incorporating a guide and video player functionalities. I worked on the UX Spec defining application flows and interaction behaviors for developers as well as provided a style guide for Hotels how hotels can customize the App Launcher Screen.

Resarch Goals and Objectives

Our goal was to subject the product to rigorous internal testing in collaboration with the research team. We refined the prototype according to the test script's parameters and assembled a group of participants well-versed in hotel TV interfaces. The outcomes were overwhelmingly positive and provided the following valuable insights:

  1. Participants expressed strong affection for the interface.

  2. The apps and interactions were both evident and beneficial.

  3. The inclusion of time and weather information was greatly appreciated.

  4. An immediate demand for a guide to peruse content selections was evident.

Design Iterations

Several iterations were made of the App Launcher design in order to understand which layout was the most efficient in terms of navigation…

Final UI

Based on the outcomes from research, we confidently selected this design for the App Launch Screen, incorporating certain modifications from the prior version.
